# How to create believable characters for your animated stories

No story is complete without a set of believable characters. Whether you're telling the story of your business or narrating a fictional crime thriller, the characters you choose can make or break your animated story.
Adding characters to your stories is a great way to connect with your audience, show emotion and add elements of fun. Sometimes, characters can help you tell your story a lot better than words can.

## Types of animated characters
First, you need to define what type of video you are creating and who will be watching. Your characters are an important part of building a connection and resonating with your audience, so once you've defined who your audience is, you'll be able to design your characters much easier. A few of your options include:
### Stick figures
If you're telling a complex story, and want your video to be more about the story than the animations themselves, then stick figures would likely be the best choice. Another perk of using stick figures is that you will not be alienating particular groups of people, which will ensure your stories are inclusive to all audiences.
### Realistic characters
Using more realistic animated characters is a great choice when you've got a specific target audience in mind and you want to try and connect with them as much as possible. By using characters that look like your audience, you'll be able to resonate and connect with them much more.

### Cartoon characters
Cartoon characters are ideal to use when you want to add humor and exaggerated emotions to your animated stories. Cartoon animations are ideal to use in the classroom to engage your students and add a fun element to your lesson.
## Create your character
Once you've decided what type of animation you'll be using to create your character, it's time to hash out the finer details.
Make them relevant to your audience
Who is your audience and what are their goals? If you know your audience well, you can design your character to match their persona. For example, if your audience is mostly school students, use school students as your characters. You need to tell your audience a story that they can relate to.
Make them unique
You don't want a dull, boring character in your animations. Instead, you want a character that will capture your audience's interest and keep them engaged. You can use your brand's unique selling point to create a unique and engaging character.
Define their personality
By defining your character's personality, you'll be able to weave them into your story much easier. A great way to show personality and mood is through the use of colors. For example, blue colors could indicate a calm, stable mood and yellow colors could indicate happiness and positivity.
Choose their physical appearance
If you know your audience well, you should have a good idea of what their physical appearance will be like. You can also use your character's mood and personality to help define their appearance.
